How South African Sellers Can Track Campaign Links with UTM Parameters
To distinguish visits from different social campaigns, add consistent UTM parameters to links leading to your own website and test them before sharing. UTM parameters are campaign labels attached to a web address. They help organise acquisition reporting when the destination has an appropriate analytics setup; they do not create tracking by themselves.
This guide is for South African online sellers who control a website and can access its Google Analytics reporting. If you sell only through messages or a marketplace, first check what reporting that destination actually supports.
Choose the question before building the link
Decide what you want to distinguish. For example: which shared creative referred website visits during one product campaign? Keep that question separate from whether visitors purchased or whether a campaign made a profit.
Imagine a Cape Town ceramics shop promoting one stoneware mug collection through a product-detail video and a packing video. This is an illustrative business, not an OgaViral customer story. The owner wants to distinguish visits associated with the two links while keeping the campaign name consistent.
The useful starting point is the intended product page. A campaign label cannot repair a destination that shows the wrong collection, outdated information or an unavailable item. Check the page before adding any parameters.
Use a small, consistent set of labels
Google’s campaign-URL guidance recommends using source, medium and campaign when adding UTM parameters. Source identifies the referrer, medium describes the marketing channel and campaign identifies the promotion. Content can distinguish creatives.
For this example, choose one spelling for each value. Keep the campaign value unchanged across the two creatives. Change the content value to distinguish the video about product details from the one about packing.
| Parameter | Example value | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| utm_source | Identify the referring platform. | |
| utm_medium | social | Describe this unpaid social placement. |
| utm_campaign | stoneware_collection | Keep the promotion grouped. |
| utm_content | handle_detail_video | Distinguish this creative. |
These are suggested example labels, not mandatory names or evidence that a link has been deployed. Name paid and unpaid activity accurately. Do not label purchased engagement as organic website traffic merely because the related post was shared without an advertising fee.

Build one example and inspect it
Google provides a Campaign URL Builder for website links. Start with the real destination you control, enter the agreed values and check the resulting address. Keep the original destination in your records as well.
An illustrative address is https://example.com/mugs?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=stoneware_collection&utm_content=handle_detail_video. This example is not a live shop or an OgaViral ordering link. Replace it with your own verified page when doing the actual work.
For the packing creative, retain the same source, medium and campaign where those facts remain the same. Use a distinct content value such as packing_video. Avoid changing several naming conventions at once, because the record becomes harder for your team to interpret.
Keep a link register that another person can use
A simple register should hold the original destination, full generated link, campaign labels, planned placement, creative reference and person responsible. Add the date checked. This creates a shared reference without requiring a complicated reporting system.
Google treats differently capitalised parameter values as different values. Choose a consistent lowercase convention and preserve it. A team should not quietly alternate between several spellings for the same campaign or creative.
When a colleague reuses a creative elsewhere, review the placement and labels rather than copying the old link blindly. If the source changes, the label should describe the new source. Retain enough context to explain why the two links differ.
Test the final destination and measurement separately
Open the exact link you plan to share. Confirm that it reaches the right product page and that the important details are readable on a phone. Check the route after any redirect or link tool used in the actual placement.
Then confirm measurement with the person responsible for your analytics setup. Opening the page successfully only verifies the destination; it does not establish that campaign information reached the intended property. Do not promise complete visitor measurement from a successful page load.

Keep a short test note with the link register: destination checked, measurement checked, who checked it and any limitation found. If campaign information is missing, investigate the setup before drawing conclusions about which creative referred visits.
Read the report without turning visits into sales
Google documents campaign values in the Traffic acquisition report, including Session source/medium and Session campaign. Use the relevant campaign and reporting period when reviewing the results. Keep your creative register beside the report so the labels remain understandable.
A campaign label is not proof that the creative caused every later purchase. Nor should a website visit be described as an order. If you report revenue in rand, identify the actual revenue source and period; do not infer a rand return from a visit count.
Our campaign-report guide explains a general evidence-first reporting structure. Its naira examples belong to the Nigerian setting; adapt your own records to rand rather than copying its figures as local performance.
Keep private information out of campaign labels
Google’s Analytics guidance says campaign parameters must not contain personally identifiable information. Do not put a customer’s name, email address or phone number into a source, campaign or content label.
Use a creative reference or campaign name instead. This is a narrow link-preparation rule, not a complete privacy or consent assessment. Keep personal customer records separate from the public campaign address.
Connect promotion plans to the right evidence
If you are considering an OgaViral purchase alongside the campaign, review the individual service description and current terms separately. A social engagement order does not itself establish website visits, South African buyers or sales.
Start with one campaign, two clearly named creatives and a tested destination you control. Keep the links and evidence together. That gives your next review a precise question to answer without inventing results that the records do not show.
